Back in the Swing of Things

I finally think I’m over my cold – hooray!  This means it’s time to get back to business.  And by that, I mean morning workouts.  It has been easy to keep up with yoga, as there are so many options for when you are not feeling well.  But that’s not the case with strength and cardio.  This past week has been a time of rest in the morning and I do not regret that.

To get back into workout mode, I rely on one of my absolute favorite YouTube channels: JessicaSmithTV.  And since I’m just trying to get back into my normal workout routine after being sick, I’m keeping it simple by using Jessica’s #FITIN15 challenge workouts.  These are a wonderful, quick way to get into the exercise habit.  I started off yesterday with the Jump Start Cardio 15-Minute Fat Burning Fitness workout  and worked on strength this morning with her Body Weight Basics.  I think by Monday I will be ready to kick it up a notch and get back into my regularly scheduled workouts.

What tips do you have on easing back into your fitness routine after an illness?

The Idols of Comfort and Control

I always knew there was a name for it.  It’s what I’ve been chasing for the past 12 years, maybe even longer.  Comfort.  Control.  A life of ease.  A life that turns out exactly how I want it to.  A life where I don’t have to work because I’ve won the lotto and am financially independent.  In this fantasy world, I can stay home and have my hands in everything my husband and kids do.  I can control everything.  And we can live in the lap of luxury.  Fancy vacations a few times a year.  The nicest clothes.  The newest cars.  Yep, wouldn’t this be nice.

Oh, but that is so not real life.  And that is not what God wants for us.  A life like that does not worship God.  It is nowhere near focused on Him.  Although I wanted to act like it was.  Those prayers before heading out to buy lotto tickets.  “Please Lord, change my life today.”  I’m kind of embarrassed.  Really.

Life is not easy.  And yet, honestly, my life is pretty great.  I have a full-time job that pays somewhat well.  I work in a safe environment with great people.  I have a beautiful home and a healthy family.  And even many more blessings.

But these blessings keep me busy.  And stressed.  It’s easy to feel overwhelmed.  And watch out once I look outside my window (or on Facebook or Instagram).  When comparisons creep in it’s all over.  How quickly we forget our blessings.  How quickly we forget who’s really in control.

Today, I want to release these idols.  I turn my eyes to Jesus and give him the control.  I want to trust him and rest in the life he’s given me.  Life’s too precious and short to waste it on anything else.

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. – Phillipians 4:19

Friday Faves

Hooray for Friday! I really feel like I’ve earned this one.  A crazy dance competition last weekend, followed by 3 days of dance pictures and a killer sinus infection.  Phew!  I’m so ready to get home and enjoy a quiet weekend.

If your version of relaxing includes surfing the web like mine does, here are a few of my favorites from around the internet this week:

6 Steps to a Handstand – I really want to master the handstand this year!  I think these tips will help.

I can solve for X but I can’t do my taxes – So very true!  Are we failing our children?

Chase the fun – yes!

when you’re finding it hard to keep up – every. single. day.

Enjoy your weekend!

Yoga When You Are Sick

A super busy week of work and my daughters’ dance obligations has resulted in a lovely little sinus infection.  I haven’t been this sick in a long time.  But even when I’m sick, I am still able to enjoy one of my absolute favorite things – yoga!  Thanks to the internet and youtube, I’ve found many ways to use yoga to feel better when I’m sick.

It all started a few years ago when I was getting so tired of fighting with my sinuses all of the time.  I am not a huge fan of OTC medicine and knew there were other things that could help me out.  The neti-pot helps a lot, but I quickly fell in love with this series of poses to relieve sinus congestion on popsugar.

Since then I’ve become addicted to practicing yoga on youtube.  Two of my favorite practices for when I’m sick are:

Yoga for Sickness, Stress, Cold and Flu from Brett Larkin Yoga

Yoga for when you are SICK from Yoga with Adriene

These have been lifesavers on days when I feel crummy.  It feels so good to still be able to stretch and relax on days when exercise sounds completely impossible.  And I really think these yoga series help me heal faster.

I’d love to know if anyone else has any great yoga practices that help when you are under the weather 🙂

And so it begins…

Hello!  I’m Jen and this is my blog.  I’m not really sure what I’m doing here, but I’m going to give this a shot.  And as the title suggests, it will be about a little of this and a little of that.

My favorite things?  God, yoga, YouTube fitness videos, reading and of course my awesome husband and daughters.  I also work full time outside of the home and hope to share that part of my life here, too, as I’ve never had much luck finding others like me online to learn from as I’ve struggled as a working mom.  Hard to believe, but my oldest daughter is now 12 and I’ve been working since she was 4 months old, so I’m pretty experienced at this working mom thing, although I sure don’t have it figured out yet!

So grab a cup of coffee, bottle of water, glass of wine, whatever you prefer, and join me for as we get to know each other.
